Megan's Project One Idea

For my first project, I want to explore what the future will hold in terms of mass incarceration. The US locks up more people than any other country and in the last 40 years, the number of inmates has increased over 500%. The US holds 25% of the world's total prison population. I want to explore what the world or at least what the United States will look like if these numbers continue to increase. Society will have to contribute more money, land, and resources to care for these inmates or consider higher death penalty rates. If society can not further dedicate space to prisoners, then it must consider house arrest, legalizing current illegal activities, or have no criminal justice system. Some of these ideas are taken to the extreme, but will need to be addressed for the future.

Jake DeMoor's Project One Idea

I’ve had a difficult time deciding what to use for my topic. The topics that most intrigue me are privacy and science, perhaps merging the two with some type of crypto-angle. I’ve thought about taking terrorism in the extreme end of using science to eliminate privacy with the goal of thwarting terrorism, and on the other hand using science to become more anonymous and gain privacy. There seems to be a fine line between too little and too much privacy, and I hope my project can help to make people realize this and strive to reach that line. There is also the matter of subjectivity on that line; not everyone is as willing to give up their privacy as everybody else, and on the other hand, some may feel the threats that a lack of privacy negates are more of an issue than others.
There certainly isn’t a “correct” amount that we as a society have become comfortable with, yet, however, this may be achieved through the passing of time. I intend to use pictures from both extremes to impose on the viewer that there must be a balance, and that this balance must be found. I will be focusing on the what goes too far on both ends of the spectrum, using pictures and info from both.

Phuong's Project Idea

For this project, I want to focus on the effect of the decline of bees' population.

Bees' population is decreasing drastically. We may lose all the plants that bees pollinate, all the animals that eat those plants and so on. A world without bees would struggle to sustain the human population of over 7 billion. Our supermarkets would lose half the amount of fruits and vegetables.

Keyanna's Project One Idea

Incarceration due to Marijuana Charges:

"According to the ACLU’s original analysis, marijuana arrests now account for over half of all drug arrests in the United States."

For this project, I recently changed my topic to one based upon those charged and incarcerated due to use and growth of marijuana. Today, this plant is legal in several states, some for recreational use, most for medical use. However, this number counts for only 8 out of 50 states. The amount of money we pay in taxes to keep these overpopulated prisons open and running is outrageous, and if tolerated much longer will only increase.
I decided to create an image that depicts what the future will look like when the plant is legal in every state vs the decision on what is done with those with these charges that are currently incarcerated.

Katelin Gephart Project One Idea

Future of Healthcare
Katelin Gephart

For the first project I decided  to look into what the future of healthcare will look like. As this can be a broad topic with daily healthcare, health insurance, emergency services and hospitals I'm going to focus on hospitals for this project. The recent 21st center developments in a data driven culture and technology are allowing healthcare providers to better adjust their care methods to better treat patients.
One such development is the use of robots in hospitals. They can be used to assist surgeons in surgery or do such menial tasks as delivering linens.
Another development in hospitals is the focus on the design of the hospitals and how the layout and design of the hospita interior can lead to increased patient healthcare. This often involves designing spaces for hospital staff and doctors to congregate and examine patient results and also by designing communal patient spaces with more greenary.
For this project I'll create a hospital scene and add in elements from my research about what is expected to be in hospitals of the future.

I'm having trouble committing to an idea for this project so far. I have a handful of ideas, but I'm not sure which to lean towards. I am interested in the idea of evolving species, and new species of animals being created due to migration. I also find myself interested in the thought of running out of our natural resources and what we would do to combat this, (as we're not really doing much now and it seems to be inevitable).
I havn't done much research and have no unquestionably factual information on the matter of evolving animal species besides hearsay. I may look into it and decide to go with that route.
However, turning to the idea of the loss of resources, including the lack of plants, I know a bit about and have researched. This will quite obviously effect the way of living. If plant life and other natural habitats begin to fail, this will blow out the entire living existence on Earth, beginning with the very bottom of the food chain. This would be a hard circumstance to combat once our environment is too far gone, and could be impossible to rejuvenate. I have seen video art pieces done on this matter by an artist named Kelly Richardson. I found inspiration of this idea through her post-apocalyptic themed work. For example, she created a scene  with a dry, empty landscape and created almost AR looking trees and had them swaying as if wind was blowing. Basically to set a scene of familiarity in an unknown location. I think the idea of creating a false reality to mimick nature would be very interesting.

Hailley's Project One Ideas

Hailley Stacy

For project one I decided I wanted my project to reflect possible future issues with our planet. As humans, we often think that the Earth exists for our purpose only, but the truth behind the matter is that humans have only occupied Earth for about 1% of its existence. But instead of focusing on the fallibility of our planet in regards to issues like global warming, I want to portray a unique scenario, like if our sun went out.
I frequently watch videos and read articles about what would happen to planet Earth if something uncontrollable in our solar system was out of line, so for my project I want to reflect one of these worst-case scenarios through art. In my composition, I would like to show a landscape scene of a popular location affected by the death of our star. Through research I have found what this scene may look like, pitch black, with the moon no longer reflecting the light from the sun, along with an extreme drop in temperatures, and a possible aurora borealis effect on the sky- as all of the stars would be extremely bright without the sun. In this composition I would like to add people, distraught from their new environment. In all, I would like viewers to feel worried about the possible future of our planet, reminded of all the potentially destroying factors that human kind seems to forget about.

Sierra's Project One Idea

My first project idea is based on the future effects of the current refugee crisis. Right now, the world, especially Europe, are kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place. There are a lot of concerns about bringing migrants into a country, and most countries lack the capacity and resources to handle a large influx of refugees. However, with climate change on the rise, the future will only bring more refugees to our shores. So, I wanted to look at how the future will be shaped by this ongoing refugee crisis, how major countries like ours can choose to handle it, and the effects of those choices.
The refugee crisis will shape the future of the Western world. The faces and languages of many cultures and countries will grow more diverse. The population will grow, cultural aspects like food and religion will also change.
Currently, The West has a pretty lackluster approach to the global refugee crisis, but in the end, the crisis must be addressed. These refugees aren't’ going anywhere. What are some possible ways to address the crisis? A good place to start is the causes of displacement; problems like terrorism, hunger, failing infrastructure, and poor standards of living. These people are leaving their homes because to stay would mean death and depravity, helping them ensures mutual survival.

Serena's Project One Idea

My idea for Project One is centered around homelessness, and how truly helping a homeless person can change the future. One example of this is when barbers donate their services to the homeless. They help to clean these people up which not only builds confidence, but opens doors to other opportunities as well (because let’s face it, a person’s appearance does matter to an extent).

Helping to take care of and guide one another is beneficial to society as whole. Getting people off the streets is good for the economy, and allows people to do other things with their time. Less soup kitchens and homeless shelters would be needed, meaning those employees and volunteers could spend their time in other ways and those buildings could be used for new businesses or business expansions. It’s a domino effect.

Giving someone enough money to buy dinner is kind. Giving someone a job opportunity, a temporary home, or even just a confidence boost is life changing.

Mike Hamm - what I enjoy doing

One thing I enjoy doing is rowing. I was a rower for five years and I have always loved to be out on the water. I hope to get back into it sometime soon.

Andy's Project One: Initial Idea

For the first project, I want to do something related in advancement in technology, specifically augmented reality/artificial intelligence. I want to focus on augmented reality/artificial intelligence implemented in cars and how it can potentially benefit the driver by creating a safe driving environment for yourself and others, but at the same time how it could potentially create harm if it becomes too reliant. Future self-driving cars is inevitable. Car companies, such as Tesla, had already been developing and releasing self-driving cars for some time now and it will not be long until it floods the market, and everyone owns one. Chip maker companies, such as Nvidia, has recently announced that they will be releasing the Xavier processor that will implement artificial intelligence and augmented reality into every aspect of the driving experience.

In my first composition, it will be the benefits and positive effects of augmented reality and AI in cars. The scene be the inside of the car having a perspective of the driver. The windshield will be set up with different augmented reality tools: such as the speedometer, gas, navigation system, etc. It will also show the road lanes and obstacles/other vehicles on the road on the windshield or the dashboard. This composition will be depicting AR/AI in the best possible scenario.

In my second composition, it will be the negative effects of AR/AI in cars. Technology is never perfect and free of errors. This applies to AR/AI. There will always be at times when it malfunctions. This holds true in cars. If people become too reliant on the AR/AI in the car, it can lead up to a disastrous end. Distracted driving will become a big issue when people become too reliant on AI. In this composition, I will create a scene where the driver is distracted and the AR/AI in the car malfunctions and it did not detect that there is an obstacle in front of the vehicle. This will result in a crash with the windshield cracked or shattered.

Project One Proposal

For this project, I want my focus to be on the effects of air pollution.

My inspiration came from multiple articles taking about air quality predictions for the year 2050. Overall, a lot of good things are said to happen by 2050 such as a decreased number of disease-related deaths and a decrease in unsafe drinking water (among other unsanitary conditions). However, the number of deaths caused by air pollution, including ground-level ozone, indoor pollution and particulate matter, are another story. These numbers are expected to increase to the point where more than 6 million people will die per year.
My first composition will basically be a gas station but for oxygen. There will be a person/line of people standing by in complete hazmat suits with detachable tanks that read "low." In the background, there will be smog everywhere making it hard to see beyond the station. This is to further that feeling of necessity for clean air and to show its scarceness. The gas station piece also plays on the idea of corporate takeover; a person has to literally pay to breathe.
In my second composition, I want to go off of my previous idea by having a single plant in a lab. However, it is locked up and heavily guarded because plants are going to be, more than ever, an invaluable resource for humanity. Again, this can also emphasize the power of larger corporations.

Drew's Initial Project One Ideas

For the first project I wanted to do something related to the possible Nuclear War that is being talked about with North Korea’s Kim Jong-un, and how the world would be affected if this were to happen. In my first composition I wanted to have Kim Jong-un next to a Staples ‘easy’ button, but instead it saying ‘easy’ it say ‘Detonate’ because Jong has stated that he has a nuclear button on his desk and that the nuclear war could be started whenever he feels like it. I think a picture of President Trump would be appropriate to include in this composition as well because, in response to what Jong-un said, Trump said that he has a button on his desk as well and that his is much bigger, more powerful, and his works.
If this war were to happen then the affects that would occur after would have to be expressed in the picture. The damage to the United States and to North Korea as well as surrounding countries would be catastrophic. The affects of radiation on future generations would cause many problems, the same way it did when the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
South Korea has urged Trump to not go to war with North Korea knowing that they will reap the negative effects on the Korean peninsula.
